Confused with work and tutorial

During my editing my world and characters into my images from my fashion shoot I noticed that that the characters weren't really convincing onto the images they looked like they were scanned on the image I need to improve them. I decided to speak to my lecturer to show me how to improve the characters within the surroundings of the image he advised me to

Use shadows for the characters with Gaussin Blur filter
Change the Opacity to blend in with the surroundings of the image

These tips should improve my characters position and look better.

Tutorial

I explained my situation to my lecturer and why i changed my images and she agreed with results they look so better by adding shadows and light editing it can make all the difference. I spoke about my ideas on how I'm going to layout the Lookbook I decided to use a mixture of portraits images and double spreads on either a A5-A4 however I will use a glued spine that a ring spine because when you see the double spread I want to see the whole image than just see holes in the middle of the image.

I was really nervous today during my chat with John and Wendy today because it such a big company I don't want to mess up. I showed some of my work to them which they liked however it very different to what they do because the company rarely use printed textiles on there garments some have stripe fabrics and small print on top and t-shirts. So what John proposed i should send some of my work to him and they will talk it over with the owners Nick and Dom and just wait and see what happens.

To be honest I'm glad they they gave up their time to talk to me and showed me around the building (above) there very nice people.

Last weeks session of Illustrator learning the repeating pattern technique which was relevent but may not use in my work at this time because my designs at the moment are motifs. I could use the repeat pattern lining of clothing, on footwear and accessories.

The session was interesting I thought this would give me an idea how to produce an animation film. The advice was that I would have to to the animation on photoshop then bring to the final cut pro software and edit on there. She also thinks that i need to plan a storyboard bring in a narrator and music to suit the film then hopefully meet with her in a one to one session to talk in more detail. I just need to decide soon if I should follow this up because it will be time consuming plus the lookbook to finish off in time for June.

I had an email from Sunspel and asked me to come in for a meeting in a couple weeks which I'm actually excited about, My lecture advised to show slides of my work so far like patterns graphic flats and the worlds I created busy busy.

I noticed Sunspel in a Menswear store called Canopy on Derby Saddler Gate the assistant told me that the company started of in Long Eaton, Derbyshire and still here today as you can see in the images below. So I got on the Internet and looked for this local company, they actually specialise in T-shirts and underwear now moved onto knitwear, shirts, Chinos, Loungewear, Womenswear and Accessories. In the 501 Levis Commercial in 1985 when Nick Kamen was taking his jeans he wore Sunspel boxer shorts and worked with designers like Paul Smith,Margaret Howell Thom Browne and Kris Van Assch. Apparently looking through their blog I noticed that their creative Director is J.W. Anderson who just done London Fashion week this year of his own label.

This was a great find in such a small world at the moment I emailed the company about if they do any tours of the factory and any internships to gain experience and contacts from this little treasure from Long Eaton.

Monday afternoon's tutorial was the same as last week to be honest however I did show my images with my characters which my lecture thought was really exciting. I also decided to do the editing on the laptop than the cut and scan version because the cut scan I was cutting the characters out and placing them on the image after I scanned it I could edit the characters or flip them either because its all on one layer.

The images are edited So what I did I used my characters from illustrator and imported them to photoshop which I used as layers to worked round the image. I used the transform function to scale the characters and reflect function to change sides of the characters. I looked at artists like KAWS who worked on top of images he was trying to work with the image using the right colours and compositions so it feel like he actually worked with the companies. During the my photoshop this month I should have more images to play with and ask the models to do crazy pose and add the character there to make it more interesting.

During my visit to my Kustomized Printers on Friday the pyramid design (bottom Left) would be to difficult to produce especially on a black sweater because as a vinyl print (Second Row) the shapes would just peel and time consuming to place every single shape on the sweater. So what I did was to look back at my design and decided to use the Pharaoh crown design (Bottom Right). I chose this design because I wanted to show the the public that I'm versatile in my work of design.

Yesterday in the tutorial I showed my ideas to do the photoshoot by doing a couple of ideas

The first on is edited my characters on illustrator import them to photoshop and edited them on top the images
Print out the images and characters cut them out place them on top of the image and scan them.

The ideas came to me by reading a graffiti artist called Kaws which he produce similar ideas onto magazines, music album covers, fashion shoots and portraits. I thought this idea could work, my lectruer and my colleagues agreed with my idea and could be beneficial in my work also the photoshop art directional workshop will be important as well. My lecturer advised me to look at a book called fashion unfolding and look for an artist Genevieve Gaukler which she used characters in different situations.

New Garments flats

I spoke to my lecturer about my garments either to produce new ones or use the recent flats She decided that i should use the new ones because these flats are more convincing and authentic for the print onto the garment. I produced the flats by using a sweater as a template and traced over it and edited the stitching hem and crease detail. The results look pretty good just a few tweeks here and there to work on however the work shop that I did was really helpful and will continue to use in future work.

This week I spoke about the Innospace workshop I attended last Thursday talking about marketing and how you to have a relationship with consumer. It was a good session and exactly what i need in my business and what I needed to do. I showed my lookbook layout only on A3 paper as a plan, Talked about my CD package of the lookbook and send them out to local newspapers and magazines in fashion and art.

The reaction was good my lecturer advise me to have a look at the all saints library for special collections on artists that could help in my work i just need to ask what I am looking for.

I didn't show my final samples thats going into production because I feel it goes off to another conversation and forget the important thing i need to say.

Innospace Theme: Marketing

Innospace is a development to help and advise their businesses in Manchester area either starting up one or improving with new skills.

I got this link from one of my colleagues and think would benefit me in what I want to do in the future. We had a 2 minute networking talking to other people on the programme about what our their their ventures are. I was really interesting on some of the people on their ideas especially the this woman wanted to create gluten free cakes that could be sold in supermarkets and the other guy wanted to design a local town website with news, sports, shopping, travel all in one place.

We had a speaker called Mark sims which owns a few business, worked for kellogs including his new venture planet earth. The speech was about Marketing on how we share relationships with customers, showed us how what u need in a brand for the consumer to understand what you are about. It explained a lot to me more clearly which i understand on what I'm showing the brand to the public.

I spoke to more people in the room which I spotted another textile designer which she wants to create her designs to garments and sell them at independent boutiques as well selling her designs off too.

The next one will be about finance which will be long and boring however beneficial to sort my costs and budgeting properly.

After the last project I needed to decide what to present for my final unit. So I decided that I like to produce a Lookbook which will show my products that can be produced and sell to the public and sold in independent boutique stores, the other one would be a catalogue showing my ideas with my prints onto other products that I could not manufacture including hats, footwear designer toys and accessories that I could show to other companies. I showed my colleagues my learning agreement of I want to accomplish in this unit.

The idea was okay however my lecturer still doesn't know who's it for ? I did know the answer to the question however I couldn't get it out, also if I showed these to a company like Reebok they would use them and i could use that pattern in any of my designs because I sold them to another company. So at the moment I need to know where is my target market is and my ideal consumer for my brand.

After carefully decideing the samples for my photoshoot this collection will be produced in the next few weeks. I deciced to use these motifs because I wanted a variety of digital and vinyl prints aswell using my charactes on their own.

3D Model from Google Sketchbook

These are images from development in 3D Models like making toys from my characters. I had help from Fab Lab that have a 3D Printing machine that can produce my model depending on the cost. The software I used is Google Sketch up that is normally used to make buildings and cars the other one is blender is used for model making however no one in centre know how to use Blender so I stuck with sketch up. It's quite difficult to make shapes because its in 3D and I mostly work in 2D and took alot of practice to do each section separate, the Tools i used the squares, circles and the Arch tool that make the curve edges on the squares. The end product looks really good there some thing I missed out like the glasses and the hat I definitely need more practice for more detailed things. This will be a prototype to show in my work in my development.
